Public education in collapse: School commissions are repeatedly having to borrow millions of bucks to pay bills

(NaturalNews) The viability of public education in the United States appears to be on a continuous downward spiral, as school districts all across the country are becoming so strapped for cash that they are now having to take out loans just to buy books and heat classrooms. A recent report by Philly.com explains that the Philadelphia School Reform Commission (PSRC) recently had to take out a massive $300 million loan just to keep the local school system running, while the Poway Unified School District (PUSC) in California reportedly borrowed $105 million earlier this year for the same purpose — and many more school districts across the country could be next based on the way things are degenerating.

In both of the aforementioned cases, a perfect storm exists where there are simply too many schools and not enough local tax revenues to sustain either them or the bloated bureaucracies that run them, not to mention the ever-flailing national economy that has exacerbated the problem even further. So to keep the two systems afloat, school districts are having to take out massive loans, which of course will strap the next generation and beyond with an unprecedented amount of compounded debt, that is if the school systems even last that long.

“I couldn’t be more unhappy that we’re in a situation where it’s necessary to do a borrowing for the purposes of merely paying our bills,” said PSRC Chairman Pedro Ramos to Philly.com about his district’s financial woes. “Some people think the solution is that we can just keep borrowing, and we really can’t.”

All the way across the country in California, the situation is much the same, as expected property tax revenue increases never actually materialized following the financial collapse that initiated back in 2008. This has left PUSC, according to some, with no choice other than to take on a risky, and extremely expensive, capital appreciation bond loan, which will end up costing future taxpayers nearly ten times the loan amount in interest charges.

“This is way worse than loan sharking,” said Michael Turnipseed, Executive Director of the Kern County Taxpayers Association in central California, to Voice of San Diego about PUSC’s situation. “What they have done is absolutely insane,” he added, referencing the $982 million future area homeowners will have to pay in property taxes to service interest for the district’s $105 million loan, which was approved in 2011.

For PSRC, one of the other major driving factors fueling the district’s ongoing financial troubles is the fact that many parents have pulled their children out of the public school system and put them into charter schools, which are experiencing a massive resurgence nationwide as a result of the educational failures of public schools. Similarly, California voters have repeatedly shot down measures that would have raised taxes to continue supporting the bloated public education system, and have instead chosen to send their children to independent, charter, and private schools.

Why are they doing this- Because when it really comes down to it, most public school systems today simply do not cut it when it comes to providing a quality education for the money. Taxpayers are simply tired of funneling their hard-earned dollars into a system that requires ever more money every year to sustain, but that offers ever less value when it comes to education.

“Early in our history, education was mainly a private, free-market activity — no compulsory attendance laws, and no school taxes,” wrote Sheldon Richman in a 1995 article on the merits of free-market education. “We need to separate school and state. Chemistry Council attempting to lobby Washington to chop off funding for research on carcinogens

(NaturalNews) Every two years, the National Toxicology Program (NTP), which operates under the banner of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), releases a congressionally-mandated report entitled the “Report on Carcinogens” (RoC) that identifies various agents, substances, mixtures, or exposures that are known to cause cancer. But the American Chemical Society (ACS), which represents many of the biggest names in the cancer-causing chemical industry, is currently trying to lobby Congress to stop the publishing of this important document.

Because the latest RoC lists formaldehyde, a chemical commonly used in both consumer and industrial products, as a definitive cause of cancer, and styrene, another common household chemical, as a suspected carcinogen, the chemical industry is up in arms about its potential profit losses. So in the spirit of Big Tobacco’s approach to dealing with inconvenient science, the chemical industry is now desperately trying to muddle the scientific process by paying off Congress to not only withhold the truth about these and other deadly chemicals, but also to prevent the public from accessing this information by blocking funding for future publishings of the RoC.

“The way the free market is supposed to work is that you have information,” Lynn Goldman, Dean of the School of Public Health at George Washington University (GWU), is quoted as saying by the New York Times (NYT) about the importance of the RoC report. “They’re (the chemical companies) trying to squelch that information.”

Similar stall tactics were used by the chemical industry back in the 1930s when the safety of asbestos was first called into question. Just like today, industry lobbyists at that time denied all the emerging science about the serious dangers of asbestos, insisting that it was all “ill-informed and exaggerated” bunk, according to the NYT. The chemical was eventually exposed and banned in the 1980s, of course, but by this point, millions of people had already been needlessly exposed to asbestos, with roughly 10,000 of them now die every year as a result of asbestos-related disease.

“The industrial chemical formaldehyde and a botanical known as aristolochic acids are listed as known human carcinogens,” says a National Institutes of Health (NIH) announcement about the eight new substances added to the 2011 RoC, which the chemical industry is trying to keep under wraps. “Six other substances — captafol, cobalt-tungsten carbide (in powder or hard metal form), certain inhalable glass wool fibers, o-nitrotoluene, riddelliine, and styrene — are added as substances that are reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens.” (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/newsroom/releases/2011/june10/)

Chemotherapy drugs are associated with severe vitamin D deficiency

(NaturalNews) Vitamin D is critically important for cancer patients in surviving their disease longer. Now, researchers have discovered that several chemotherapy drugs used to treat cancer may also cause severe vitamin D deficiency in patients. More disturbing is that attempts to give such patients supplemental vitamin D have met with mixed results, unless very high doses are applied. If these surprise findings are more widely applicable, they could provide new explanations for the extremely negative side effects of chemotherapy drugs.It is well established that cancer patients have lower levels of vitamin D than the general public, but the relationship between vitamin D status and severity (stage) of cancer among patients remains unclear. It was exactly this link that oncologists at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute were researching when they unexpectedly discovered that the strongest risk factor for severe vitamin D deficiency was the use of chemotherapy drugs. Patients taking chemo (any of the three regimens being used) were 400 percent more likely to show severely depressed levels of the vitamin (less than 15 ng/ml) compared to those not on chemo (multivariate analysis of 315 patients). This is problematic, as one recent study showed that colon cancer patients with the lowest levels of vitamin D had a significantly greater risk of death compared to those with higher levels (hazard ratio equals 1.92, lowest to highest quartile).Not long after the results from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute were published, French researchers announced similar findings, but this time for breast cancer patients. Before treatment, 79.5 percent of their patients were insufficient for vitamin D (levels below 30 ng/ml), but 97.4 percent were insufficient after treatment (with neoadjuvant chemotherapy). Chemotherapy had caused the patients’ median vitamin D level to drop from 21.3 ng/ml to 14.7 ng/ml. As with colon cancer, lower vitamin D levels among breast cancer patients are correlated with reduced survival.Research on maintaining vitamin D levels during chemotherapy treatment is still in early stages. Doctors at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute tested 2000 IU/day of supplemental vitamin D given to their colon cancer patients in a randomized trial. The average level of vitamin D for all patients at the start of the trial was 17.5 ng/ml. After six months of supplementation, this rose to a healthy 37.5 ng/ml for non-chemotherapy patients, but to only 29 ng/ml for patients on chemo, which is still insufficient. A similar trial was run with breast cancer patients, using low dose (1000 IU/day) or high dose (50,000 IU once per week). Patients started the trial with an average of 27.5 ng/ml. On the low dose, patients’ levels increased by only 9.4 ng/ml. However, the high dose increased patients’ vitamin D by 24.3 ng/ml, which brought their levels into a healthy range. These trials confirmed that chemotherapy may reduce a patient’s ability to utilize supplemental vitamin D, requiring them to take much higher doses than normal to achieve sufficiency.

The mechanisms by which chemotherapy drugs lower vitamin D in cancer patients remain unclear, but could include decreased absorption via subclinical mucositis or increased metabolism of vitamin D via the activation of enzymes such as CYP3A4. Until further research is completed, there is a risk that most (if not all) chemotherapy drugs may depress patients’ vitamin D levels. Cancer patients taking these drugs should therefore consider monitoring their vitamin D status throughout the treatment period as well as aggressive supplementation to maintain adequate levels which are associated with a better prognosis.

They also contain flavonoids, antioxidant pigments that give plants their color. Different types of flavonoids have been identified based on their varying chemical structures. Over the past decade, scientists have become increasingly interested in the potential for various dietary flavonoids to explain some of the health benefits associated with fruit- and vegetable-rich diets.

Anthocyanins are the most abundant types of flavonoids in fruits and vegetables, according to researchers from the National Institutes of Health. The anthocyanins cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, pelargonidin, peonidin and petunidin are responsible for the red, blue and purple colors in berries and grapes. Anthocyanins may prevent cancer, according to the NIH researchers. They found that anthocyanins are capable of scavenging free radicals and stimulating enzymes that fight toxins, including cancer cells.

Flavanols are a type of flavonoid abundant in green tea, white tea, chocolate, apples and grapes. These foods predominantly contain flavanols called catechins and proanthocyanidins, which may benefit your brain function, according to a study published in the “Journal of Neuroscience” in 2012. The researchers in the study found that mice on catechin-rich diets had improved learning and memory abilities. The researchers called for further studies to determine whether these flavanols may be useful to treat people with cognitive problems, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Flavanones are a type of flavonoid common in citrus fruit and foods derived from lemons, oranges and grapefruit. Citrus fruit contains eriodictyol, a flavanone that may help protect your vision, according to researchers who published a paper in “Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science” in 2009. They found a link between orange consumption and a lowered risk of macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness, and suggested that eriodictyol may be responsible. Flavonols, a type of flavonoid abundant in apples, yellow onions, broccoli, kale, teas and berries, offer antioxidant benefits. Quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin and isorhamnetin are examples of flavanols.

Flavones and isoflavones are other types of flavonoids. The flavones apigenin and luteolin are found in thyme, celery, parsley and hot peppers. Many beans and legumes, including soybeans, are abundant in isoflavones. Flavones may decrease your risk of developing cardiovascular problems, according to Finnish researchers who published a study in the journal “Epidemiology” in 2001. They found that men who took in higher amounts of flavonols and flavones were less likely to die of a heart attack than men who took in low amounts of these phytonutrients.

There are somewhere around 3,000 chemicals that have been identified as being used in today’s modern fragrances. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has identified at least 900 of these chemicals that are known toxins.

This means that these chemicals can cause problems at the cellular levels once your body absorbs them transdermally (through the skin). Some popular brands of perfume have been found to be toxic to the respiratory tract when inhaled and the nervous system which occurs both through inhalation of airborne particles and transdermal absorption.

More and more people are being diagnosed with chemical sensitivity these days. This is likely due to our near-constant exposure. Chemically sensitive individuals may have more than allergic reactions and toxicity at stake. Studies have linked perfume use with severe depressive disorder and anxiety in individuals who exhibit sensitivities to chemical fragrances.

Drinking milk from genetically-modified cows will make dairy allergies a lot more prevalent

(NaturalNews) Scientists from New Zealand have successfully developed a new breed of genetically-modified (GM) cow they say produces 96 percent less of a supposedly allergenic protein known as beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), which aids in the absorption of vitamin A. But the so-called “hypoallergenic” GM cow also produces twice the normal amount of casein, another more common dairy allergen that afflicts roughly three percent of the overall population, according to estimates.

The purported idea behind the project was to deliberately modify cow genes using RNA interference (RNAi) in order that children with alleged BLG sensitivity or allergy could once again drink cow’s milk. But as is the case with all other GMOs, the intended genetic alterations led to other unintended alterations, which in this case included the production of far more casein, which is not affected by heat processing in the same way as BLG, than normal.

According to Anower Jabed and his colleagues from the government-run biotechnology group AgResearch, which led the project, a series of alterations to the normal gene expressions of both mice and cows ultimately led to the discovery, which the team is hailing as an incredible success. And yet, the study, which was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, fails to address the fact that the GM milk’s other changes will actually cause a huge spike in other types of dairy allergies.

Commenting on the study, Dr. Robert Wood, Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, explained that the doubling of casein protein in GM milk will likely trigger many more cases of milk allergy than are currently diagnosed. As quoted by GMWatch.org, Dr. Wood said the so-called “breakthrough” milk is actually “probably the worst-case scenario for most of [his] patients” — in other words, GM milk will become a primary cause of the very thing it is said to prevent.

Not surprisingly, the mainstream media is nowhere to be found in addressing this important facet of the study’s findings. Rather than critically examine the implications of how this new “Frankenmilk” will most definitely lead to more milk allergies, biotechnology industry whores like the Los Angeles Times are actually bemoaning the fact that GM milk will not be approved quickly enough because it still has to go through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s regulatory rigmarole. Another glaring inconsistency in the study is the fact that BLG is mostly destroyed through pasteurization anyway, which means genetically-engineering cows not to produce it is completely useless. Since the vast majority of children drink pasteurized milk products, those with milk allergies must be allergic to something else like lactose — pasteurization destroys the lactase enzyme, which is necessary for processing lactose — or casein, and not BLG.

At the same time, numerous studies, including one published in the journal Allergy back in 2008, verify that pasteurizing milk actually makes it more allergenic. Raw milk, on the other hand, which contains intact BLG and a host of digestive enzymes and nutrients that are otherwise denatured or destroyed during pasteurization, is often fully digestible for people with “lactose intolerance” and other milk allergies. What this all suggests, of course, is that many milk allergies are actually a result of milk processing methods, and not necessarily milk itself. And these allergies will only be exacerbated as a result of genetic modification, as is obvious in the new study’s findings.

TEPCO finally admits catastrophic Fukushima disaster was completely avoidable

(NaturalNews) After repeatedly denying that it could not have done anything more to preventatively curtail the damage sustained at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck on March 11, 2011, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has finally come forward with an honest admission that its now-stricken facility had preexisting structural and safety problems that the company basically ignored.

TIME.com reports that TEPCO recently issued a statement explaining that prior to the three Fukushima meltdowns resulting from the catastrophic damage, company officials were already well aware of the fact that the facility was in dire need of serious renovations and retrofit. But because of various political, economic, and legal concerns, TEPCO deliberately delayed addressing these important issues, which is now coming back to haunt the company.

“Looking back on the accident, the problem was that preparations were not made in advance,” said a TEPCO investigatory task force, led by the company’s president, Naomi Hirose, in a recent statement. “Could necessary measures have been taken with previous tsunami evaluations- It was possible to take action.”

This is a shocking admission, especially since TEPCO’s handling of the crisis up until this point has been questionably deceptive. Back in 2011, for instance, journalists began to call out TEPCO officials for allegedly covering up evidence showing that the earthquake, and not the tsunami, was ultimately responsible for the monumental damage that occurred at the Fukushima facility. Since the very beginning, TEPCO has continually tried to deny responsibility for the meltdowns, as well as the impending failure of Reactor 4, which was recently brought to the world’s attention by former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan. According to his analysis, the ground beneath Reactor 4 has been steadily sinking which, besides representing a very serious global threat, also illustrates the fact that the construction of the Fukushima facility was not properly designed to sustain heavy earthquake movement. Once once we were free

(NaturalNews) We’re so much more sensible now. We don’t live our lives as much as we arrange them and organize them. B follows A. D follows C. We take our medicine and our shots because the doctor says so.

We’re careful, because accidents happen.

We don’t say what’s on our minds a lot of the time, because other people might pass that on, and who knows- We might get into trouble.

But once upon a time, when we were young, we were free. We didn’t take any shots and when we got sick we recovered. We were stronger than kids are now. We didn’t ask for much protection and we weren’t given much, and we survived.

There was no talk about the needs of the group. When we went to school, we weren’t told about ways we could help others. That was something we learned at home. We weren’t taught about The Planet. Instead, we learned to mind our own business, and it wasn’t considered a crime.

When we played games, adults weren’t hovering or coaching every move we made. We found places to play on our own, and we figured it all out. There were winners and losers. There were no plastic trophies. We played one game, then another. We lost, we won. We competed. Losing wasn’t a tragedy.

There were no childhood “conditions” like ADHD or Bipolar, and we certainly didn’t take any brain drugs. The idea of a kid going to a psychiatrist would have been absurd.

People were who they were. They had lives. They had personalities. They had eccentricities, and we lived with that.

There was far less whispering and gossip. There were fewer cliques. Kids didn’t display their possessions like signs of their identity. A kid who did was ignored, even shunned.

Kids never acted like little adults. They didn’t dress like adults. They didn’t want to be fake adults.

Our parents didn’t consult us about what we wanted. We weren’t part of the decision-making process. They didn’t need us for that.

We weren’t “extra-special.” We weren’t delicate.

No one asked us about our feelings. If they had, we would have been confused. Feelings- What’s that- We were alive. We knew it. We didn’t need anything else.

We could spot liars a mile away. We could spot phonies from across town. We knew who the really crazy adults were, and we stayed away from them.

We didn’t need gadgets and machines to be happy. We only needed a place to play. If you wanted a spot to be alone, you found one, and you read a book.

There was no compulsion to “share.”

School wasn’t some kind of social laboratory or baby-sitting service. We were there to learn, and if we worked hard, we did. Teachers knew how to teach. The textbooks were adequate. Whether the books were new or old didn’t matter.

Kids weren’t taught how to be little victims.

Sex was a private issue. You were taught about that at home or not at all. You certainly didn’t learn about it in school. That would have been ridiculous.

Some of us remember being young, and now, we still have that North Star. We still don’t take our shots and medicines. We still don’t take every word a doctor says as coming from God. We still know losing isn’t a crime or an occasion for tragic theater.

We still know how to be alone. We still think gossip and cliques are for morons. We still feel free. We still want to live, and we do.

We still resent intrusion on our freedom, and we speak up and draw the line. We still like winning and competing. We still like achieving on our own.

We can spot self-styled messiahs at a hundred yards.

As kids, we lived in our imaginations, and we haven’t forgotten how. It’s part of who and what we are.

We aren’t bored every twelve seconds. We can find things to do.

We don’t need reassurances every day. We don’t need people hovering over us. We don’t need to whine and complain to get attention. We don’t need endless amounts of “support.”

We don’t need politicians who lie to us constantly, who pretend we’re stupid. We don’t need ideology shoved own our throats. Our ideology is freedom. We know what it is and what it feels like, and we know no one gives it to us. It’s ours to begin with. We can throw it away, but then that’s on us.

If two candidates are running for office, and we don’t like either one, we don’t vote. We don’t need to think about that very hard. It’s obvious. Two idiots, two criminals- Forget it. Walk away.

We don’t fawn, we don’t get in other people’s way. We don’t think “children are the future.” Every generation is a new generation. It always has been. We don’t need to inject some special doctrine to pump up children. We remember what being a child is. That’s enough.

When we were kids, there was no exaggerated sense of loyalty. We were independent. Now, we see what can be accomplished in the name of obligation, group-cohesion, and loyalty: crimes; imperial wars; destruction of natural rights.

It didn’t take a village to raise a kid when we were young, and it doesn’t take one now. That’s all propaganda. It panders to people who are afraid to be what they are, who are afraid to stand up for themselves.

We don’t feel it’s our duty to cure every ill in the world. But it goes a lot further than that. We can see what that kind of indoctrination creates. It creates the perception of endless numbers of helpless victims. And once that’s firmly entrenched, then magically, the endless parade of victims appears, ready-made. When some needs have been met, others are born. The lowest form of hustlers sell those needs from here to the sky and beyond. They make no distinction between people who really can use help and those who are just on the make.

We didn’t grow up that way. We don’t fall for the con now.

When we were kids, the number of friends we had didn’t matter. We didn’t keep score. Nobody kept track of the count. That would have been recognized in a second as a form of insanity.

As kids, we didn’t admire people simply because other people admired them. That was an unknown standard.

We were alive. That was enough. We were free. That was enough.

It still is.

When we were young, we had incredible dreams. We imagined the dreams and imagined accomplishing them. Some of us still do. Some of us still work in that direction. We haven’t given up the ghost just because the world is mad.

The world needs to learn what we know. We don’t need to learn what the world has been brainwashed into believing.
